this has to one of the biggest oxymoron of singapore.

found on the website "Uniquely Singapore"

with the intro text...
"For the Orchard area, these are the nightspots that are strongly recommended:

In no particular order,"

the site highlights 5 nightspots... with the same picture of "Shaw Centre"

so much for "uniquely", "in-no-particular-order"

either that... someone working for them.. loves shaw centre.

quotes of da day: Singapore

[Category-Quotes] [Category-Sillypore]

in 1993: [url]

Singapore is a relentlessly G-rated experience, micromanaged by a state that has the look and feel of a very large corporation. If IBM had ever bothered to actually possess a physical country, that country might have had a lot in common with Singapore. There's a certain white-shirted constraint, an absolute humorlessness in the way Singapore Ltd. operates; conformity here is the primedirective, and the fuzzier brands of creativity are in extremely short supply.

Now: [url]
Many local people in Singapore seemed to feel the need to half-apologize to me about the Singapore government. And every last one of these lamenters was, insome sense or another, affiliated with the Singapore government.

rant of da day: singapura ekonomics 101

[Category-Sillypore]
just needed to put this down... it's as simple as this....

What % of publicly listed company in singapore, is govt linked?
let's simply things.

First the govt privatise certain sectors.
1) privatised govt sectors get listed. we, the citizens of singapore, pay for those shares. (they own assets to used to belong to the govt/ country)

2) hey! those assets were funded by the govt.... which are funded by us in the first place. (keep the count: we have paid twice for the same assets.)

3) now the trend is.... these "companies" sell their assets/ properties to REITs... and guess what.. who's buying those REITs? us.... baby... still us...
is that good biz or what? single asset, 3 times over.

think about it.....

you get a new hairstyle at the salon... and that is probably the last time you will ever see it... you wake up the next day/ after 1 wash... you just forced to style it, like 364 days before that.

"freestyle", "natural"... it doesn't matter what the hairstylist tells you.. you can't do it..

here's the place... to store your "one-time" hairstyles.

those mosquitoes never had a chance... but they are winning the war.

it's like... after killing a entire HDB block worth of mosquitoes. you go to sleep... and when u wake up... those mosquitoes "hey! free lodgings! free food! tell the whole village!" there's more than ever of them. sunday! the whole kampong have moved in.

the mosquitoe coil is burning, baygon sprayed... i've "wimbledon-ed" a good 45 mins... go into the shower and when i come out? the next bus of mosquitoes have arrived. wtf!

war goes on......

best "aliens" movie scene:
you walk into the toilet. ready to take a dump. you are certain, you have already killed most of the mosquitoes in there.... 2 kamikazi fly right into your face. "wtf! where do they come from?"... you look up.... and go "SHITE!" and run out to fetch your weapon.
it's like discovering the mother alien's nest....

best "aliens" movie dialogue:
"bitch! get down here. i'm waiting for you!" as you sit... on the toilet. talking to the big fat mosquitoe perched on the walls above you..... (for the interested readers: that one was terminated by a patented move: "the jump smash")

Drink up!

[Category-PokerWhisky]

i knew it.... that 's what i've been telling everyone... whisky is the "water of life. good for you...

THE traditional toast when drinking a good malt whisky is, of course, slainte (to your good health). To the uninitiated, this is just a pleasantry, but there is good scientific evidence that whisky is good for you. Earlier this year, studies were published showing that a regular (but modest) dram may guard against the risk of cancer. Whisky contains antioxidants, in the form of ellagic acid, which wage war on the unstable free radical atoms in the body that hasten cell replication. But the more cells replicated, the more chance you have of developing rogue cancer cells. Fortunately, ellagic acid is a highly-effective free radical scavenger that absorbs or eats up rogue cells. And single-malt whiskies have even more ellagic acid than red wine.

"...And single-malt whiskies have even more ellagic acid than red wine."
Now there is even more good news. Scientists in Japan claim to have discovered that a dram a day is also good for keeping wrinkles at bay. A three-year study has found evidence that the chemical constituents found naturally in barrels made of oak are secreted into the whisky. These react with the whisky itself to slow down the ageing process, leaving your face looking much younger. But then, we always knew that whisky was the water of life.

"The Macallan" bar....

[Category-PokerWhisky]

great! now i gotta at least try it once.... and blow more monies.

[link]
Another first for The Macallan

The Macallan single Highland malt whisky has become so sought after in Singapore it now has its own bar, where a nip can set you back £117.

Located within the aptly named Divine Society Club, the private bar has only one entry criteria: you must be well heeled, especially as membership fees alone are over £1,500 a year.

Frequented by the country’s rich and famous, The Macallan bar is located in the opulent lobby of the famous Parkview Square building in Singapore city – affectionately known by ex-pats as the Gotham City building of Batman fame. Created by Las Vegas designer James Adam in grandiose art deco style, The Macallan bar is as opulent as it is exclusive and the famous Speyside malt is the only Scotch on sale. Ceilings painted with Italian frescos tower overhead while marble with gold trim decorate floors and walls.

Next to The Macallan bar is a wine cellar standing 12 metres tall. Believed to be the tallest in Asia, waitresses known as ‘wine angels’ are attached to invisible wires and pullied up and down on ‘wings’ to reach ordered bottles.

The Macallan is highly coveted in Singapore and other parts of Asia. In Taiwan and Japan, it enjoys huge popularity with thirty somethings, particularly young businesswomen.

The bar has proved an outstanding success since it opened, according to Charles Yeo, Singapore’s marketing manager. “The concept of The Macallan bar is one we had wanted to develop for some time in Singapore and with the exclusive and extraordinary Divine Society, we found the perfect partner. Like the Divine Society, The Macallan stands for uncompromising quality and sophistication.”
